Mansome

During class today, we have discussed the evolution of man in popular culture. What we have discovered is that their is no Average Man. This man does not exist. What does is exist is multiple personas of men, tons and tons of archetypes that one man can be under multiple examples. The masculinity of men has changed. Our American culture has adapted to the changing man. Stores in malls have had to open up more clothing outlets that are appealing to the multiple sides of the man.

In the reading "Boys will be Boys", Tyler Thoreson, the executive editor for Men.style.com, the leading men's fashion site, has stated that "...media depicitons of men is either hyperfeminist sissies or testosterone-soaked brutes..." Thoreson also states that "...the whole metrosexual thing is a bit of a media construction...it's a bit of a fake trend. I mean, sure, guys are spending more time concerned on how they look, but they're still guys. They still have the DNA of men..." From the video "Mansome" we see the stereotype of a "metrosexual" shown through Ricky Manchanda, a man from the inner city, who runs a clothing store, that is concerned on his appearance, the way he dresses and the way he views himself. Some people of society would see this as the "feminising" of men, but Ricky doesn't see it as being feminine, rather as taking care of himself as a person. Ricky still enjoys sports and other masculine activities, but puts more time in himself. This is linked to what Thoreson is trying to say. Ricky pampers himself, but his DNA is still that of a man.

  1. I would have never even thought to use two people that basically to the same things like Tyler and Ricky. I think that's a nice way to connect the two men because they are so similar. I too believe that men are still men no matter how much they care about their appearance. I really enjoy the amount of evidence you have as well, it shows you knew what your opinion was and how you wanted to show the reader. The quotes just helped you even more.
